National Simultaneous Storytime

We are excited to announce that our school will be participating in the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) on the 24th of May.

National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual event held by the Australian Library and Information Association, where a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author is read simultaneously across the country.

This year's book is The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young and illustrated by Heath McKenzie. It is a fun and engaging book for children of all ages. Our shared story sessions will be followed by some exciting activities related to the story.

Participating in National Simultaneous Storytime is a wonderful opportunity for our students to develop a love of reading and to be part of a nationwide event. We encourage all parents to support this initiative and read a chosen book with their child at home. Some activity ideas include:

  • Setting up a cozy reading area in your home with pillows, blankets, and a small bookshelf stocked with books
  • Reading the selected book aloud with family members
  • Connecting with friends and family virtually and reading the book together
  • Creating a book-inspired craft. This could involve drawing or painting a picture, creating a diorama, or even making a puppet.
  • Writing a book review or summary of the story. This is a great exercise to encourage reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
  • Dressing up as the characters. This can lead to a playful family photo, and it is a fun way to engage children in the story
  • Consider making a book donation to your local library or school to help promote reading and literacy in your community
  • Encouraging your child to participate in the CtK Sloth colouring in competition. Entries are available via the library and your classroom teacher.
